Some people like hot sauce, and then there are others who LOVE hot sauce.Hot Sauce Recipe, Casa Blanca Mexican Restaurant, MA

People who adore hot sauce will put it on just about anything, and will eat any version that brings enough heat for their liking. If you are one of those people who are on the fence about hot sauce—you enjoy the way it adds an extra dimension to your meal, but also fear that it will drown out the other flavors or burn your mouth—then we have the perfect hot sauce recipe for you.

The following recipe from Honest Fare is perfect for those looking for a mild hot sauce recipe. Not only is it mild, but it’s unique, as this green hot sauce draws its color in part from an unsuspecting source—a kiwi! This hot sauce recipe is a nice balance of sweet and spicy; cool and hot.

For Mild Green Hot Sauce:

  • 1/3 poblano pepper
  • 1 jalepeno pepper
  • 1/2 serrano pepper
  • 1/3 long green chili
  • 1 tomatillo
  • 1/2 kiwi
  • 1 Tbs honey or agave
  • 1/3 tap salt
  • juice from 2 limes
  • 2 Tbs white vinegar
  • splash water
  1. Rinse and remove seeds from peppers.
  2. Add all ingredients to food processor and blend for a minute to combine. Taste and add more pepper or seeds to increase spice or more agave or kiwi to tone it down. Blend for about 3 minutes, adding a little more water to thin if needed. Consistency should be even but not totally silky.
  3. Store in glass jar for up to two weeks.

This green hot sauce recipe is recommended for use on salads and seafood dishes. It would work especially well on top of ceviche!

The number one thing to remember when making hot sauce is to wear gloves whenever handling hot peppers! Hot peppers can irritate the skin if your hands are not protected. Depending on how hot you’d like your hot sauce, you can either add the seeds of the hot peppers (for more fire!) or remove them.
