Not only is shrimp is packed with protein and omega-3s, but shrimp is super delicious as well. Found in many Mexican dishes, shrimp is the perfect food to enhance the health and flavor of your diet. Here are a few great ways to eat shrimp that won’t widen your waistline.
Shrimp Cocktail
Of course, the most common way to consume shrimp is when it is dipped in cocktail sauce. While frequently served as an hors d’oeuvre, shrimp cocktail also makes for a healthy snack. Cocktail sauce can be made by combining two parts chili sauce, one part prepared horseradish, and a few drops of lemon juice.
In a Ceviche
Ceviche is a seafood appetizer popularized by Mexico and South America. Typically served in a martini glass for extra class, it includes raw seafood that is “cooked” by the acidic juices of the fruits involved. You can mix just about any fruit you’d like with your shrimp ceviche, such as avocado, grapefruit, lime, and mango. Make sure to include some fresh cilantro along with a lot of citrus. Ceviche is a great snack to serve at a cocktail party, and pairs well with freshly-made margaritas.
Grilled Shrimp
While sautéing is a common way to eat this shellfish, grilling shrimp is much healthier, because it doesn’t require the use of oil or butter. A nice dry rub is all you need to get a burst of flavor. Chili powder and Cajun spices do well on grilled shrimp. Pop a quartered lemon on the grill too and then squeeze it on top of the cooked shrimp.
In Fajitas
Fajitas are the perfect platform for shrimp, and even better, they tend to be one of the healthier Mexican menu items. The easiest way to make fajitas even healthier is by skipping the tortilla and eating the filling with a fork. You won’t miss out on any of the flavor but you’ll skip out on some of the carbs. Simply grill a mixture of shrimp, peppers, onions with your favorite spices for the ultimate shrimp dish.
